A shock absorber, or damper, is a vital component of a car's suspension system. It is a mechanical or hydraulic device that absorbs and dampens shock impulses. Shock absorbers reduce the vibrations whenever a vehicle travels over rough ground, leading to improved ride quality and handling. Shock absorbers are filled with a viscous fluid such as oil that helps absorb energy from the vibrations. Some advanced suspension systems will use a a magnetorheological (MR) fluid that also contains some iron particles. When magnetized, these particles increase the viscosity of the fluid. This effectively allows an onboard system to actively control the degree of damping - based on the road conditions and driver preference.
The cost of a shock absorber replacement can vary from $263 to $412 depending on the make, model and year of the vehicle.
